Canonical IPv4 CIDRs, longest-prefix routing, abstract gateway/NAT admission and three firewall policy styles. Outbound NAT establishes a mapping only after a permitted initiation; unsolicited inbound traffic cannot use it. Stateful return traffic can reuse an established allowed flow; stateless policies need a reverse-port rule. This bounded five-tuple request/reply model omits full TCP state, NAT port allocation, timeouts and exact provider route precedence. AWS: VPC routes / internet gateway / NAT concepts. GCP: VPC subnet routes / Cloud NAT concepts. This is a bounded five-tuple teaching model, not TCP, a complete NAT implementation or all AWS/GCP route precedence. NAT is not an inbound authorization mechanism. No cloud resources are created.

VPC routes / internet gateway / NAT concepts: Routing reachability, address translation and firewall admission are independent decisions.
Security groups are stateful allow lists; AWS NACLs are ordered stateless rules; Google VPC firewall rules use priority/stateful behavior. These conceptual styles omit provider-specific details, hierarchical policy and implied rules.
Firewall rule checks, seed 42. Plotted sample sizes respect each lesson’s explicit input limits.
Keyboard: Space play/pause · ←/→ step · R restart · 1–5 speed. Reduced motion disables transitions.
A route to the internet is not permission to accept unsolicited inbound traffic.
Load the average scenario and step through the initial state before playing. Read the variables and final result, then switch to the worst scenario. Pause before a decision and predict which explicit condition determines the next action.
Canonical IPv4 routes use longest-prefix matching and declared tie priority. Internet-gateway traffic requires public mapping; NAT permits a mapped reply after outbound initiation. Local/peering paths and blackholes are separate route choices. Firewall policy and return-flow state are independent gates.
AWS: VPC routes / internet gateway / NAT concepts. Google Cloud: VPC subnet routes / Cloud NAT concepts. Select the provider mapping before loading input. Product names identify concepts; they do not create resources, imply identical APIs or promise equivalent service guarantees.
Send outbound HTTPS through NAT, then compare its reply with a new unsolicited inbound packet. Add a more specific blackhole route and predict the selected path. In Try mode, choose the next modeled decision and use the hint to inspect its preconditions. Explain a changed result using the actual input rather than the provider logo.
The player displays the model's operation metric and declared bounds. Compare best, average and worst presets before changing only one parameter. Simulation operation counts are different from provider quotas, cloud bills, throughput benchmarks and wall-clock service latency.
References show longest-prefix lookup and ordered stateless rules. Public mapping, NAT tuples and stateful flow tables surround those helpers in the player. All four languages show local reference logic rather than provider SDK calls. Validate inputs and account for the unmodeled production concerns before adapting a reference.
Use this scenario when reviewing VPC routes / internet gateway / NAT concepts or VPC subnet routes / Cloud NAT concepts: identify the workload assumption, failure boundary and evidence needed for the selected design. Record one alternative and the constraint it changes.
This is a bounded five-tuple teaching model, not TCP, a complete NAT implementation or all AWS/GCP route precedence. NAT is not an inbound authorization mechanism.
Answer the mechanism question, distinguish the exercise from a real cloud operation, and justify a controlled failure experiment. Re-run the scenario if your prediction disagrees with the traced state.
